Stress is a part of our lives. How we handle it is what makes the difference. Short-term stressors usually resolve themselves. Seeing a frightening picture may trigger a stress response but it passes quickly. Long-term stressors drain of of energy and fatigue our adrenal system if left unchecked. Get ahead of stress by taking time for relaxation every day. Try these simple relaxation tips that you can do anywhere.
- Breathe deeply. It can’t be stated too often. No matter what you are doing, if you stop and take a moment to fully fill up your lungs with air starting at the bottom of your diaphragm you will feel a calming sensation. Slow, deep breaths can help lower blood pressure and reduce heart rate. Breathe in slowly for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 4 seconds, and then exhale slowly for 4 seconds.
- Smile. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, a forced smile can bring on feelings of relaxation. Try smiling when doing anything that is unpleasant and see if it isn’t a bit easier to handle.
- Have some alone time. Even five minutes by yourself without any pressures or demands from anyone or anything else will give you a sense of well-being and help to clear your mind.
- Think a happy thought. Many people will think of this as daydreaming. Just let your mind wander to a happy place. Imagine any anxiety or tension float away with the happy thoughts.
- Take a shower. Let the water just flow over you and let your thoughts flow away with the water. Warm water will help your muscles feel relaxed. Let your mind relax with them.
- Call a friend. Just knowing that you are contacting a caring person will help you release tension and feel more relaxed. The call doesn’t have to have a purpose other than just connecting with a friendly voice.
- Eat dark chocolate. Chocolate has vitamins, minerals and powerful antioxidants that support health. Raw chocolate has tryptophan which is known to enhance mood.
