Tax Cuts, Trade-Offs, and the Real Cost of Political Optics
Remembering Memorial Day: Honoring Every Sacrifice
Before we dig into policy, it’s essential to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day. This day is about more than BBQs or summer sales. It’s a time to honor the men, women, and even animals — dogs, dolphins, sea lions, and horses — who gave their lives in military service to the United States. We owe them more than remembrance. We owe them our commitment to uphold the values they died defending: liberty, sovereignty, and truth.
What Is the “One Big Beautiful Bill”?
The so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” is a sweeping, 1,000+ page piece of legislation passed by the House with major implications for taxes, social programs, defense spending, and more. While it claims to support middle-class Americans, a closer look reveals a bill wrapped in glossy branding with questionable substance underneath.
The Tax Reform That Isn’t
The bill is being sold as bold tax reform, but the reality is far more nuanced. The extension of the 2017 tax cuts continues to benefit the wealthy. New exemptions for tips, overtime, and interest are helpful but minor. The child tax credit increase expires in 2028. The SALT deduction cap increases but only applies to married couples making up to $500,000. These aren’t structural changes; they’re temporary relief packaged as long-term solutions.
Then there’s the so-called “Trump Accounts,” which offer a $5,000 per year contribution cap for children born between 2024 and 2028. With a maximum total of $20,000, it’s not enough to fund a full college education. And loopholes allow wealthy families with private foundations to contribute unlimited funds.
The Hidden Cuts and Conditions
Medicaid recipients face increased work requirements starting in 2026. These new rules introduce more red tape, which disproportionately harms those already in low-wage, unstable jobs. The Department of Justice has exposed widespread fraud, but there is little transparency about where the recovered funds go. Instead of reinvesting them into education or support, recipients are being penalized.

SNAP: From Nutrition to Junk Food
SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is increasingly used to subsidize junk food. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has voiced support for restricting SNAP purchases to healthier options. But that must be paired with better access to nutritious food. Telling people what not to buy without helping them afford healthier alternatives is not a solution.
Defense and Disconnection
The bill includes $150 billion for defense and $70 billion for border security, with a large portion allocated to wall construction. This from a president who has positioned himself as a peace advocate. Real security begins at home, with education, healthcare, and jobs — not missile systems and border walls.
What About Social Security?
One of the most supported ideas — ending federal taxation on Social Security — was scrapped due to the Byrd Rule. We’re told it would cost too much. Yet, the U.S. has sent nearly $200 billion overseas in the last two years. That amount could have funded several years of tax relief for seniors.
Who Really Benefits?
- Winners: Wealthy households, corporations, defense contractors, and political legacies.
- Losers: Seniors on fixed incomes, working-class families, students, and low-income SNAP recipients.
This bill is not structural reform. It’s selective relief, favoring the few at the top while burdening those who need help the most.
What Real Leadership Could Look Like
If President Trump truly wants to lead for the people, here are five actionable steps:
- End chemical aerosol spraying under the PREP Act and Title 50 by issuing an executive order and urging Congress to close legal loopholes.
- Halt mRNA COVID-19 injections and initiate a transparent investigation into Operation Warp Speed.
- Demand full audit and restitution from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
- Abolish the Federal Reserve and IRS and transition to a tariff-based revenue system.
- Ban GMOs and redirect subsidies to organic and regenerative farming while launching a national nutrition education campaign.
Closing Thoughts
Politics should be about people, not optics or profit. This bill, like many before it, feels like another round of bait and switch. If we truly want change, we must stop settling for headlines and demand policies that serve the public good.
