Story about the recipe: My sister is a bit of a forager. She lives on 11 acres up on the west hills of Portland. A neighbor let his apple trees just go this last year. She kept bringing me his apples knowing they were organic. I made 36 quarts of applesauce from the foraged apples. So Free all the way around, Free literally, Free of sugar and toxins as well. I love the image of her going down the hills picking all the apples that dropped in the street from the neighbors tree.
Sugar Free Slow Cooker Applesauce
Ingredients
- About 10 medium size apples, any flavor you like
Instructions
- Cut up apples into approx 1-2 inch chunks.
- Put in slow cooker with approx ¼ cup water in the bottom.
- Turn the slow cooker on low for at least 4 hours.
- Stir throughout the process to test the consistency you want; some like it chunky and some like it smoother.
I peeled the apples since they were foraged and didn't have great skins. If you like your applesauce with skins on you can do that.
If you like really smooth applesauce, once its at a very very mushy state you can then put it either in a blender or strain it through a sieve. I was able to just cook it till it was almost 100% smooth and was very happy with the consistency and taste. I added nothing but the water and just cooked. enjoy.
I put mine in mason jars. You can also put in BPA free freezer containers. If you are using glass, make sure you leave at least ¾ inch at the top for expansion.
