With a licorice-like aroma, STAR ANISE is the attractive dry fruit of the Illicium verum tree, native to China. Currently, more than 50 bioactive compounds possessing antibacterial, antioxidant or analgesic properties have been identified in star anise. One of these compounds, shikimic acid, is used as the basis of some anti-viral flu medicines. Interestingly, star anise was also shown to disrupt communication between bacteria in milk, delaying spoilage.
